![]() ![]() The notion Newton might remain available until an injury creates an opening is just crazy to me. So now Newton finds himself without a team after the entire league has finished filling their quarterback depth chart. Either way you could argue being a football player has not been his primary focus since the 2015 Super Bowl appearance. But he said it backwards, or maybe his priorities have now flipped. Remember that? I thought Cam was being rhetorical when he made that statement. The ‘ Entertainer and Icon’ quote from his rookie season. So now I’m wondering if Cam if really outraged or is he just trying to sell his app? Is his first love football or the spot light? So you know what else popped into my mind? So I tried to figure out the font he uses and quickly found out it is an app that he sponsors, not a font you can find using Microsoft Word. This font is hard to understand which in my view dulls his message.Ĭam Newton says he never asked for a trade and the #Panthers are forcing him into this. What in the hell is up with that font? I’ve learned that one key to being understood is using words people understand. I’ve defended Newton in the past but sometimes he really doesn’t help himself with the ‘misunderstood’ label. I written about this in the past, the first time in 2013 and then again in 2016. I just think Cam is very misunderstood as a person. Some will scoff at the notion but after observing Newton for the past nine seasons I can see why some might make this judgement. There is supposed concern that Cam could disrupt the locker room. There is another theory as to why a team may have passed on Cam. I would imagine he would jump at that right now. Spotrac lists his market value at $15 million per season. ![]() That is a real possibility and is the only reason that makes sense. Now it could be Newton is asking for too much money. But citing Newton’s decline in talent lacks merit when it didn’t stop organizations from signing inferior talent. It’s understandable if teams want to examine Newton at their facilities and see him throw in person before signing him, which can’t happen until facilities open. Even with Newton’s decline, he is still a superior talent to Jeff Driskel, Case Keenum, Blaine Gabbert, Brett Hundley and David Fales. Visible decline didn’t stop teams from signing Philip Rivers, Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton and Marcus Mariota. So I’m not buying the ‘decline’ argument and neither is the author of this article. Yes he has some injury history but none of it is a recurring problem. Mostly recently an anonymous NFL general manager said ‘Newton’s decline was evident.’ At 31 years of age Newton is in his prime and is a physical specimen to say the least. For those that do need an upgrade at quarterback there are a couple prevailing theories. For example, most teams don’t need him as they have already settled on their quarterback depth chart. The biggest question at the moment is ‘Why?’ Why is Cam Newton still looking for a new team? My theory is there is no one reason all 31 teams have abstained from signing him. It’s amazing to me the former NFL MVP remains unsigned since being released by the only team he has played for in nine seasons. Letting go of the only overall top draft pick will take time.
